Extract from an interview with G. Depardieu about his work with Dr Tomatis

In this video, Gérard Depardieu shares his personal experience of the Tomatis method and its effect on his speaking and communication skills.

He explains that when he arrived in Paris at the age of 17, he was illiterate, stammered, was highly emotional, and had only a handful of words to express himself with.

He struggled to express himself, and when he made a short film, Alcibiade et Socrate, Jacques Doniol-Valcroze had to dub him. But Jean-Laurent Cochet's drama classes saved him. Cochet introduced him to Musset, Marivaux and Corneille, and taught him the importance of keeping silent in the spotlight.

Cochet also introduced him to Dr Alfred Tomatis, who was working on the link between language and hearing, and who discovered that he had hearing problems.

Thanks to the Tomatis method, which uses specially filtered music to stimulate the muscles of the ear and the auditory cortex, Depardieu was able to improve his speaking and communication skills, control his emotional over-reactions and develop his memory.
