I came to the Tomatis® Centre Geneva in December 2018 with my 10-year-old son, Gaspard, who had dyslexia, dysgraphia and attention problems.
We saw Mr Frère because Gaspard is finishing primary school, which he did not enjoy much because of his difficulties, and we wanted to help him before he started lower secondary school (cycle d'orientation in Geneva). After a poor relationship with one of his teachers, his difficulties at school grew worse, as he lost a lot of confidence in himself and his abilities. His dad, who had done the Tomatis method as a child, suggested we try this approach alongside the work with the speech therapist who has been seeing him for several months.
The first listening session was a bit hard to stick to, as on some days he was reluctant to wear the device, but the results showed fairly quickly in his behaviour. At home he was more cheerful and helped out more. His progress at school was not striking, except in dictation, where he remembered words better, but Gaspard could see the progress he was making and that encouraged him to keep going.
The results after the second listening session, on the other hand, were spectacular! This second programme was easier to set up, as he was much more willing to follow it regularly. Our family and friends noticed that his behaviour had changed a lot: he smiles more, he is more open, he looks people in the eye when he talks to them and he really communicates differently. The changes in his handwriting are visible too: his letters are no longer written on top of each other and his writing is much easier to read. For the first time, he even managed a dictation with no mistakes, which had never happened before!
We have seen improvements in other areas too, especially his relationship with music. He is now much happier to play the guitar, no longer sees practice as a chore and is less shy about playing in public.
His speech therapist has also noticed his progress. He is much more attentive in their weekly sessions, and we think this is helping him get more out of them.
