The Tomatis® method is known for its relaxing effect on the brain, by regulating the links between the vestibule and the cochlea. Because the foetus hears its mother's voice, it matters that this voice is pleasant for the baby. What is more, according to A. Tomatis, the mother's voice is a kind of primary emotional nourishment, crucial to the child's development.
The bone conduction of sound used by the Tomatis headset carries the music through all the bones of the body, where the foetus can feel it.
This supports the baby's sensory development and puts it in contact with Mozart's music from the very first months of life.
Did you know that Florida passed a law requiring children to listen to Mozart for half an hour a day? To find out more, read this fascinating article in the magazine Psychologies.
You can read Annaëlle's testimonial. She has been a mother for nearly 10 months and tells you about her experience of Tomatis music therapy during her pregnancy.
A study carried out in 1988 by the maternity unit of Vesoul General Hospital gave very conclusive results. It involved 170 pregnant women divided into 3 groups (no preparation, traditional preparation, and psycho-sensory preparation with Audio-Psycho-Phonology).

Babies whose mothers had followed the psycho-sensory preparation had a higher than average birth weight (+4%), and their Apgar scores also showed that they recovered faster and better than the other babies.
The reduction in anxiety, or relaxation effect, achieved with the Tomatis method was observed using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale.
It is quite normal to feel more stressed as the birth approaches, but according to the studies on the psycho-sensory method, anxiety levels fall significantly.
Here are extracts from “L'Est Républicain” about the Vesoul study.
